in 2012, Dutch teacher and landscape designer Dick Hoekstra returned to spend one month to expand our reforestation initiative. He directed the planting of nearly one hundred trees on land that six years ago was planted with palm oil trees. They will be havested in time, as the canopy trees grow and native grasses reclaim what had been a rice field as recently as last year.
Different species of grass grew this year on land that was planted with canopy trees last year. Tall grasses grew along what appears to be a natural trench, draining the land of the swampy areas wet from the rainy season. Stands of ten foot tall willow-like primary forest trees had already established themselves in some areas of the reclaimed land.
When we can, we will finalize the purchase of more land adjacent to this property down to the river, to create Wli's only forested corridor to its mountains. While this land is not presently being farmed, most of the canopy forest trees have already been harvested. We have purchased some of the last tall trees on this land on which we have put a down-payment.
We will continue to develop this land not only to reclaim this land as forest, but will begin to plant plants and trees that will provide income to model sustainable agriculture/horticulture practice in a forest environment. We will maintain this property as a Rainforest Botanical Garden, for research, recreation and wildlife conservation.
